Wu- long, Oolong , The Black Dragon tea

During the past few weeks as we rolled out our activation programme, a predominant theme emerged from all the customer queries “which tea is best suited to induce weight loss?”

Well, most teas contain compounds that enhance weight loss naturally. However research has revealed that the catechins compounds in green and oolong teas induce thermogenesis, that is the body’s natural ability to turn fat into energy. This process helps the human body to lose all that unwanted fat. White tea also promotes weight loss. Though it is gaining popularity, it is rare and very difficult to come across.

Oolong tea refers to a semi-oxidized type of tea in between the green (non-oxidized) and black tea (completely oxidized). It has an unique taste and alluring aroma and is characterized by a reddish brown appearance. The leaves of the same plant (Camellia Sinensis) is used to make black, oolong, green and white tea. The differentiating part is the process to prepare oolong tea. Here the freshly plucked tender green leaves are withered under strong sun and then goes for oxidation before curling and twisting. Smoother than black, less leafy than green, Oolong teas exhibit balance and harmony.

There are many versions as to how this mystic tea came to be known as the Black Dragon tea. A popular version is about a hunter, nicknamed Black Dragon in the Fujian Province of China. While chasing a deer one day and trying to hunt it, he left his bundle of fresh tea leaves in his bag too long. This caused the leaves to oxidize and the leaves changed colour to almost brown. He processed the tea as he would normally do and the result was the highly fragrant, distinctive flavored oolong tea.
